How to secure your bike at home

They say a man’s home is his castle, but sadly that isn’t the case when it comes to protecting your bike!

There are over 300,000 bike thefts a year in the UK, with over 50% being from someone’s home.  Do bear in mind this is the reported figure so it is likely to be higher when you consider bike thefts that people do not report to the police.

The Problem

I have cycled for a number of years in many different disciplines: road biking, mountain biking, time trialling, triathlon, commuting so, much to my wife’s absolute pleasure, I have a bunch of bikes.  I have a lot of friends that are in a similar position and when I ask, “Where do you keep your bikes?”  I hear a range of answers:

  • In a separate garage
  • In a separate shed
  • In a joined garage
  • In the kitchen
  • In the spare room

My next question is always then, “What do you lock it to?”  I rarely hear the correct answer which is of course, a wall or a ground anchor.  I tend to hear something like nothing or the radiator!

The sad fact is that this makes it easy pickings for a thief – especially since many people don’t even lock it when it is in the house, garage or shed so once through the door, they’re gone with your pride and joy.

The Solution

There is no escaping it, you must lock your bike with a good quality lock even when it is in the house and you must lock it to an immoveable object.

It is worth mentioning here that your insurance will most likely insist on this and if you cannot prove that you bike was locked with a certain rated lock to an immoveable object, they will refuse to pay for the theft.

The strength of security is always dictated by the weakest link.  For example, you have a Diamond rated anchor but a Bronze rated lock – they’ll cut the lock.  You have a Bronze rated anchor and a Diamond rated lock – they’ll get through the anchor and carry the bike away.

I wrote about it here but will always say, buy the absolute best lock / anchor you can afford – in fact, buy two locks if you can!  A determined thief will steal your bike if they want to, full stop.  The best thing you can do is to make it as difficult as possible so that they decide it’s too much hassle so they’re steal something easier.
